About Me

My photo
Though I have many interests, writing speculative fiction is my current focus. Until recently, I spent most of my creative energy doing artwork. I also love being out in the natural world. With my husband, I manage several preserves of wild Florida habitat.

Background

I grew up in Winter Park, Florida, by a lake surrounded with live oaks. I think that's what sparked my life-long love of nature. Entering my teenage years, I read a lot and hoped to become a writer. I wrote a story back then, but my interests drifted elsewhere.

I attended Emory University, earning a B.A. in philosophy and an M.A. in social psychology.

While raising two kids and working at various jobs, I wrote a few more stories. Then, after a long stretch focused on my artwork, I tackled a novel. At the time, I hadn't studied the craft as thoroughly as I should have, and the first draft had some obvious flaws. Still, an agent showed interest. That spurred me to learn more. A well-known editor gave me personal direction, helping me a great deal. Also, I read every book on writing I could find. I'm still reading those over, working on my skills.

Many things inspire my writing, including my travel experiences. I've been to most parts of the world, with the exception of Africa, which I plan to visit later this year.

Below is a link to duotrope's digest--if you're a writer and you don't already know about this, you should check it out. Very helpful for submitting short fiction.
